Why Does Your Chain Slip Under Load?
When your bike chain slips only under pressure—like when climbing or accelerating—it’s usually not the chain itself. The issue is often with cable tension, derailleur alignment, or a dirty cassette.
Replacing parts isn’t always the answer. Let’s first try 100% DIY fixes.
5-Step Chain Slipping Fix (15–20 Min)
- Clean the cassette and chain with degreaser and an old brush. Grit = skipping.
- Check derailleur alignment – from behind, make sure it’s not bent inward.
- Shift to highest gear and test tension – use barrel adjuster for micro-tweaks.
- Check chain wear – if you MUST measure: ruler or chain checker tool.
- Lubricate correctly – one drop per link, let sit, then wipe.
Still Skipping?
It could be time to re-index your gears or check for clicking noises that often signal underlying issues.
